On The Ice

Coaching In Action

Ryan's approach is built from a decade of professional experience — every session reflects how the game is actually played and won.

Ryan's Approach

Every rep has a purpose
Sessions are built around your specific gaps — not a generic curriculum run the same way for every player.
Pro habits from day one
Compete level, preparation, and attention to detail are treated the same way they are in the pros.
Real-time, direct feedback
Corrections happen in the moment — not summarized at the end. Players leave knowing exactly what to fix.
Skill and IQ together
Technical work is always connected to game situations. Skills get built in context, so they show up in games.
Off-ice accountability
Nutrition, recovery, and mental preparation are built into the conversation as part of every player's development.

Professional Pedigree

Coached By
A Player.

Ryan didn't just study the game — he played it professionally for over 10 years. Competing across the ECHL (Kansas City Mavericks, Reading Royals) and SPHL (Pensacola Ice Flyers, Quad City Storm, Knoxville Ice Bears, Peoria Rivermen) — going up against high-level players every single night.

That experience lives in every drill, every correction, every rep he puts his players through. When Ryan teaches edge work, shooting mechanics, or puck protection — he's teaching from muscle memory forged in real games, not from a textbook.

What Gets Transferred

Pro-Level Skills.
Built Into Your Game.

Every skill Ryan teaches is something he lived at the professional level. Not theory — direct translation from the ECHL, SPHL, and USHL to your game.

Power Skating

Explosive first steps, stride efficiency, and maximum power output per shift — the mechanics Ryan refined over a decade of professional play, now broken down rep by rep for your game. Ryan also works with Next Level Power Skating to deliver structured power skating programs for all ages and skill levels.

Edge Work & Agility

Deep edge control, razor-sharp turns, and fluid transitions. The footwork that lets defenders stop on a dime and forwards blow past checks — transferable at every age and level.

Stickhandling & Puck Control

Soft hands, body shielding, and confident puck possession at full speed under pressure. Skills built to survive contact and hold the puck when it matters.

Shooting & Scoring

Elite release mechanics, shot selection, and deceptive angles — taught by someone who studied goalies for years. Turn opportunities into goals more consistently.

Unique Edge

Hockey IQ & Game Sense

Ryan's decade as a player plus his years officiating in the USHL gives him a 360° view of the game. He teaches anticipation, positioning, and split-second decision-making from angles most coaches never develop.

Compete Level & Mental Edge

Professional hockey is 50% mental. Ryan teaches the compete habits, battle details, and game-moment focus that separate players who show up from players who perform.

Defensive Ability

Gap control, stick positioning, and body angling that shut plays down before they start. Built from years of playing and officiating at high levels — reading the play a step ahead.

Grit

The relentless, never-quit mentality that shows up in puck battles, board play, and the final minute of a close game. Ryan instills the toughness that pro-level hockey demands.

Nutrition & Training Guidance

What you do off the ice matters as much as what you do on it. Ryan shares the fueling strategies, recovery habits, and dry-land training principles he relied on throughout his pro career to stay durable, sharp, and at game weight all season.

The Coach

Elite Players Are Made, Not Born.

Ryan Devine is a professional hockey player with over 10 years of experience — including time in the ECHL (Kansas City Mavericks, Reading Royals) and SPHL (Pensacola Ice Flyers, Quad City Storm, Knoxville Ice Bears, Peoria Rivermen). A two-time professional player champion, he knows what elite performance demands from the inside.

As an active USHL linesman, Ryan is on the ice every single week at one of North America's premier junior leagues — watching the game unfold from the center of the action, not the bench.

A Unique Edge

Most coaches see hockey from one side. Ryan sees it from both. A decade of competing as a player taught him what it takes to execute under pressure. His years as an official give him an unmatched 360° view of positioning, flow, and decision-making that most coaches never develop — and he brings that full picture to every lesson.

That dual background translates into a genuine edge for his players in three key areas: defensive ability — reading plays and positioning the way officials and pro players see them; skating — mechanics refined through years of competing and officiating at the highest levels; and nutrition — the fueling habits Ryan relied on to stay at game weight and perform shift after shift throughout a professional career.

Standard sessions run 45–60 minutes on ice. Ryan offers true 1-on-1 private sessions as well as small-group training (2–4 players) for teams or groups of friends. Small-group sessions split the cost and are a great way to simulate game-like scenarios while still getting personalized feedback.
Session pricing has two components: Ryan's training fee (based on session type and duration) plus ice rental cost, which varies by rink and time slot. Because ice costs differ between Johnny's Ice House and Blackhawks Ice Center, the total will depend on which rink and slot works best for you.
